This morning the 12-artist Mercury Prize shortlist has been unveiled by Lauren Laverne on 6Music, and it features some pretty awesome albums, including the brilliantly ambitious second album from our faves THE 1975.
For the first time, fans of the nominees can help choose the final six artists with the overall winner being chosen by a panel of expert judges this year including Jessie Ware, Clara Amfo, Jarvis Cocker, Kate Tempest, and Ellie Rowsell of Wolf Alice.
The Mercury Prize Albums of the Year are:
ANOHNI – Hopelessness
Bat For Lashes – The Bride
David Bowie – Blackstar
Jamie Woon – Making Time
Kano – Made In The Manor
Laura Mvula – The Dreaming Room
Michael Kiwanuka – Love & Hate
Radiohead – A Moon Shaped Pool
Savages – Adore Life
Skepta – Konnichiwa
The 1975 – I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful and so unaware of it
The Comet Is Coming – Channel The Spirits
It’s Michael Kiwanuka’s second nomination for one of our favourite albums of the year so far, Love & Hate. It’s stunning. And Radiohead get a record fifth nomination for their new album A Moon Shaped Pool.
And it’s good to have our boys The 1975 on that shortlist after we were surprised by their omission from the 2014 list for their debut album.
The winner will be announced at a special 25th anniversary show at the Eventim Hammersmith Apollo, London, on Thursday, September 15.
