The epic battle of the bands begins at the Cockpit in Leeds tonight, with the first four of 60 acts vying for the coveted prize of opening the NME/Radio 1 Stage at this year’s Leeds and Reading festivals. Five other bands will rock on the BBC Introducing Stage. The battle’s going to be like Helm’s Deep but with less Uruk-hai (wink, wink, LOTR geeks)…
And so it begins tonight with BEARFOOT BEWARE taking on IMP (anyone got a link?), KALI and the first of a clutch of Centre Stage bands, QUENTIN’S BASEMENT take to the stage and impress enough to head to Bramham Park (and wherever it is in Reading. Some gravelly field near the high street, if memory serves correctly) in August.
The rest of the heats look a little like this:
Holy hell, that’s a lot of bands! Some I’m very familiar with (hello Marsicans, St Somebody, British Daylight, Seas-Of-Green and You Had Me At Hello) through the Centre Stage competition. But there are a lot of others I’ll be needing to check out more thoroughly.
Anyway, best of luck to you all. May the best band(s) win! Fight on!
Tickets for each heat are £4 – you can pick them up from any of the bands playing, or pay on the door. Get yourselves along to support your mates as well as checking out the wealth of talent this fair city has to offer.
For any more info (like you really need it), head over to the Cockpit’s website. As it was my birthyday at the weekend, and Marsicans gave me this video as a pressie, I’m going to share it all with you. Just coz. Yay Marsicans!
