Leeds indie-pop dude Joe Carter goes by the slightly cooler moniker of BEMBE when he’s with his musical pals putting together some smooth 80s-fused alt-pop gold.
He’s just released his debut single, a double a-side of shimmering electro-pop chilled grooves. There’s some classic George Michael in there, as well as LANY-esque lazy summer vibes.
There’s melody, there’s romance and there’s soul. There’s just enough to truly hook us in, leaving us hankering for more. Seriously, this is magic.
Too Long builds on a classic 80s foundation, percussion snaps playfully over easy synths and Carter’s smooth vocals. It hints at nostalgia without being retro, a canny mix of old soul and fresh pop.
Slow follows suit, rolling guitars and fizzy synths burst together. It’s pretty dreamy.
Recorded in a bedroom studio, complete with double bass, drum kit and understanding (or deaf) neighbours, these two songs exude such promise.
We’re keen to see where Bembe goes now. And we urge you to keep an eye on this fella, too. Check out Too Long and Slow below:
