Like the new version of The City, which came out in May, THE 1975 have gone back and tinkered with Sex, the fan favourite which originally came out last November, and which will appear on their debut album, The 1975.
Nothing too drastic, though, as frontman Matty explained to Zane Lowe when he premiered the song. They’ve just given it “more teeth”. The vocals are cleaner, the bassline has more impact. The playful hooks and that refrain remain, obviously.
It’s like the brass on your nana’s sideboard – the cherished heirlooms lovingly polished and given pride of place for all to see. Aww.
It took a while for me to fall for the new version of The City, I clung on to the rougher original longer than I thought I would, but this new version of Sex is an instant winner. It could be their biggest hit this time round. It’s a storming tune.
>> Sex is out on August 26, closely followed by The 1975 on September 2 (eeek!). Buy that HERE. They’re playing at Stylus at Leeds Uni on Monday, September 23. Get tickets for that HERE before they sell out.
