360 Club, Leeds // Friday, July 15, 2016

The 360 Club upstairs at the Library in Leeds is always a good place to head to for some of the best emerging acts from the area. Tonight is no different, as Harrogate-based band BLACK OCEAN celebrate the release of their debut self-titled EP.

Black Ocean

Joining the quartet tonight are Leeds natives LATE and Harrogate band BRING THE WOLF. Unfortunately VAL CALE had to pull out of their slot after a bout of flu meant they were band members down.

Four-piece Late open up the show, receiving a warm reception from the audience as they work their way through their pop-rock set before Bring The Wolf, as well as having a powerful name, bring the power with their blues-rock riffs. Vocalist Tom keeps the crowd fully entertained before tonight’s headliners take to the stage.

As images of Sean Bean appear on the projector screen – cue the odd chuckle from the audience – Black Ocean tear straight into opening track It’s What We’re Here For, as vocalist/bassist Jonny screams the track’s refrain throughout the choruses.

The four-piece are tight and the energy is high as they blast through the heavy, riff-based I’ve Got A Plan (check out the video for that below). There’s a refreshing urgency to their performance, barely letting the final notes of one song ring out before launching straight into the next.

The tracks from the new EP (which can be picked up HERE) are over in a flash as the squalling feedback rings out at the end of Glow. As the crowd is urged forward to dance, Jonny remarks: “all these songs are Sean Bean-approved, by the way,” continuing the unofficial King Of Yorkshire theme.

Only Sick Inside gets an airing tonight from the band’s previous releases, which is a slight disappointment, but it’s clear the four-piece only have their sights set on the future. Their set comes to a close with a brand new, as-yet-untitled two-part thriller leaving everyone in the 360 Club to head home with ears ringing, proving that Black Ocean are definitely a band you need to catch live.
