Just glancing at Twitter for a few minutes while the kettle boiled here in Bang HQ, and Duncan Seaman of Yorkshire Evening Post flagged up a very interesting ‘gig’ over at The Duchess in York next summer. It seems that Anthrax’s bearded guitarist – and one of my teenage idols – SCOTT IAN is heading to Yorkshire as part of a Spoken – or ‘Speaking’ – Word tour. Hell yeah..!
As anyone who has seen Henry Rollins’s spoken word shows over the years can testify (and if you haven’t, make sure you do), these ageing rockers have a lot to say – some of it sweary, all of it hilarious.
So Scott Ian will be regaling tales of his time in New York thrash metal band Anthrax, one of the original Big Four, a career which has spanned more than 30 years. Plenty of rock skeletons to drag out of the closet for sure.
Says Scott: “I’m calling it ‘Speaking Words’ because the pretension of saying I am doing a ‘spoken-word’ tour is too much to bear. This ain’t no poetry reading. This isn’t an evening of sensitive discourse. It’s an evening of ridiculous truth. It’s me talking (swearing) about this insane life I’ve led over the last 31 years, the people I’ve met and the shit that’s happened. And when I’m done swearing, you can ask me anything you want, the floor is yours…”
Sounds like it’ll be a real treat for metal fans – and, to be honest, anyone with a fascination for what goes on back stage at concerts and in recording studios – and he’s bound to touch on his love of poker, comic books, what it’s like to be a zombie and possibly even Anthrax’s recent Grammy Award nod.
Scott Ian’s Speaking Word is on at The Duchess in York on Thursday, May 30. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 9am.
