Things have been quite on THE JAPANESE HOUSE front most of this year while she’s been busy working on her debut album. Then last month, a gorgeous new single Lilo and an equally gorgeous video was released, closely followed by a new UK tour, and now we have news of that highly anticipated album.
Good At Falling, released on March 1 next year, will feature previous single Saw You In A Dream, Lilo and recent release Follow My Girl. Plenty to take in, then.
So ahead of her UK tour, which sees her returning to Leeds for a show at Brudenell Social Club, we’re pulling all the info together as well as sharing the stunning Lilo video, which features her ex girlfriend Marika Hackman.
First up, then – the Lilo video:
Pretty poignant stuff right there. The Japanese House’s Amber Bain getting ridiculously intimate, intensifying the song’s heartbreak as she finds comfort with her former love in serene surroundings. Considering she started just over three years ago quite the enigma, it’s a powerful tug on the heart strings seeing her expose such personal feelings in such an open and honest way.
Amber says: “Filming this video was painful, easy, real and surreal all at once. I asked Marika to be in the video because I couldn’t think who better to be in it than the person the song is about. I’m extremely grateful that she said yes; I’m lucky that my ex-girlfriend is also my best friend.
“It was a slightly mad decision, but ultimately II think we captured exactly what I wanted to, which was a true and genuine representation of the love and intimacy we share. When I watch this video my heart breaks, but in kind of a nice way.”
Dry your eyes, and take a look at the short string off dates she’s got lined up for later this month:
Sunday 18 – St Luke’s, Glasgow
Monday 19 – Newcastle Academy
Wednesday 21 – Scala, London
Thursday 22 – Thekla, Bristol
Friday 23 – Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Saturday 24 – Institute, Birmingham
Sunday 25 – Gorilla, Manchester

Speaking of the new album, which Amber produced with BJ Burton (Bon Iver) and The 1975’s George Daniel, was recorded in her bedroom with finishing touches added in studios in Belgium, Oxford and Wisconsin.
The result is an album that draws from Bain’s life in a way her work never has before; a more personal and vulnerable yet confident body of work. “These songs are definitely more direct,” she explains, “the album has a lot more of me in it, so it makes sense”.
The album’s tracklisting is:
Went to Meet Her [Intro]
Maybe You’re the Reason
We Talk all the Time
You Seemed So Happy
Follow My Girl
Everybody Hates Me
Marika Is Sleeping
