I’ve managed to drag myself away from the new Daft Punk offering long enough to watch the video for Leeds rockers DINOSAUR PILE-UP‘s new tune Derail a good few times. It’s ace.
To be honest, on the first viewing, I didn’t pay much attention to the song – I was pretty hooked on the mini-movie which stars, rather bizarrely, Diana Vickers looking very fine in a black wig on the run in the Californian desert after killing her kidnapper (don’t worry, kids – the weapon is suitably pixelated). And there’s a great little twist at the end, which I didn’t see coming. I said it was ace.
So, back to it and a little more focus on the song. Kicking off with a beat that got me singing George Harrison’s Got My Mind Set On You ever-so-briefly (what?! It’s a classic!), the tune chugs into life with the line “I’ll be your train wreck, now watch me derail.”
It’s a chunky pop-rock anthem with driving guitars, a sweet breakdown and explosive singalong choruses. It’s going to be even better so see Matt Bigland and band belt it out at Live At Leeds on May 4th (Leeds Uni Refectory at 4.45pm).
Oh, it seems that Diana Vickers is on the same label and the Pile-Ups, so that kinds of makes things a little less bizarre. Still, who’d have thought it, eh?
Looking forward to DPU’s new album Nature Nurture dropping on May 13th.
